Hajj: a short, intense surge in clinical demand
According to the General Authority for Statistics, 1,707,301 pilgrims performed Hajj in 2026 (1447H), 1,546,655 of them from abroad, served by 441,049 workers. The 2025 Hajj had 1,673,230 pilgrims. Ahead of the 2026 season the Ministry of Health announced capacity of more than 20,000 hospital beds, including more than 3,800 in the Holy Sites, 25 urgent care centres, more than 3,000 ambulances and emergency vehicles plus 11 air ambulances, and more than 52,000 healthcare practitioners. After the season it reported more than 2.5 million healthcare services delivered to pilgrims and 8,342 hospital admissions.
For disposables this concentrates consumption into a few weeks: face masks for staff and patients, disposable bed sheets and couch rolls for high-turnover beds and examination couches, stretcher covers for ambulances and emergency transfers, patient gowns, gloves and isolation gowns. Because every item must hold SFDA authorisation before it is shipped, Hajj orders need registration and stock planned well before the season.
Umrah keeps demand running all year
Umrah spreads the load across the year. GASTAT counted 15,222,497 Umrah performers in the first quarter of 2025, 6,523,630 of them from abroad, and 5,443,393 in the second quarter of 2025; the third quarter of 2024 had 6,254,751, up 35% on a year earlier. Large visitor numbers outside the Hajj season mean the city's hospitals, primary care centres and food-service operators consume disposables continuously, not just in Dhul Hijjah.
Mass catering for pilgrims and visitors also drives food-hygiene consumables: hair nets, bouffant caps and PE food-service gloves for kitchen and serving staff.
Makkah Health Cluster and its hospitals
Health Holding's Makkah Health Cluster serves more than 1.9 million beneficiaries through 115 primary care centres, a medical city and 14 hospitals, with 3,094 beds. Hospitals named by the Ministry of Health in its Hajj preparations include King Abdullah Medical City, Al Noor Specialist Hospital, King Abdulaziz Hospital, King Faisal Hospital, Makkah General Hospital, Ajyad Hospital and Al Jiwar Hospital.
Government purchasing for the cluster runs through NUPCO and Etimad tenders, which overseas suppliers enter through a Saudi-registered distributor. Makkah is inland, so sea freight for the city is landed at a Red Sea port such as Jeddah and moved by road.
