What is a 3-ply disposable face mask?
A 3-ply disposable face mask is a single-use face covering built from three layers of non-woven fabric. The outer two layers are spunbond polypropylene — the coloured water-resistant side that faces outward and the soft white side that rests against the skin — while the middle layer is a meltblown filter core whose fine, densely packed fibres trap droplets and airborne particles. A thin malleable nose clip runs along the top edge so the wearer can pinch the mask to the contour of the nose and cheeks.

Three-layer construction and fit
Each layer does a specific job. The spunbond outer layer is fluid-repellent and gives the mask its strength and colour; the meltblown middle layer is the filtering heart of the mask, where charged micro-fibres capture particles by mechanical and electrostatic action; the inner spunbond layer is soft and absorbent against the face. At 25/25/25 gsm the three layers balance filtration with breathability so the mask can be worn comfortably through a shift.
The adjustable nose clip is the key to fit: pinching it over the nose bridge closes the gap that otherwise lets unfiltered air — and the warm breath that fogs glasses — escape around the top. The flat-fold pleated body opens to cover from the bridge of the nose to under the chin, and the chosen fixing (earloop, tie-on or head-loop) holds it in place without pressure points.
Earloop, tie-on and head-loop options
The earloop mask is the everyday default — quick to don and doff, ideal for short procedures, reception areas, food handling and general public use. The tie-on (head-tie) mask uses four fabric ties knotted behind the head and neck, distributing pressure away from the ears and giving a more adjustable, secure fit favoured for longer theatre and dental sessions. The head-loop mask uses elastic loops that pass behind the head rather than over the ears, a comfortable choice for extended wear and for staff who find earloops tiring.
All three styles share the same three-layer body and adjustable nose clip; only the fixing changes, so a facility can standardise on one mask construction while letting different departments choose the fit that suits their work.
