A silicone instrument mat is a reusable, autoclavable medical-silicone mat covered in raised pins on which surgical instruments rest, organised and separated for cleaning, sterilisation, drainage and storage. Unlike the single-use items in this range it is reusable. WinHyCare supplies mats of 60 × 90 cm, 6–15 mm thick, rated -40°C to 230°C and cuttable to size, packed 1 piece per bag and 20 bags per carton.
Why choose this silicone instrument mat
- Reusable and autoclavable medical silicone — not single-use like the rest of this range
- Raised silicone fingers/pins hold and separate instruments to prevent contact damage
- Open finger structure lets water drain and steam circulate for thorough cleaning and sterilisation
- Wide temperature rating of -40°C to 230°C makes it autoclave- and freezer-safe
- 60 × 90 cm sheet, 6–15 mm thick, that can be cut and adjusted to fit any tray
- Organises instrument trays for cleaning, sterilisation and storage in the CSSD
What is a silicone instrument mat?
A silicone instrument mat — also called a sterilisation finger mat or instrument pin mat — is a flexible mat made of medical silicone whose surface is covered in many raised fingers or pins. Surgical and medical instruments are rested between these pins so they are held apart, cushioned and organised on the tray. The mat is used through the whole reprocessing cycle: while instruments are cleaned, while they are sterilised, and while they are stored, the pins keep each instrument separated, protected and presented for inspection.
Importantly, and unlike the single-use bed sheets, bibs, couch rolls and covers in this range, the silicone instrument mat is reusable and autoclavable. It is washed and sterilised along with the instruments and used again, rather than discarded after one use. This makes it a durable accessory for the central sterile-supply department (CSSD) and the operating theatre instrument tray.
Material, temperature range and reusability
The mat is moulded from medical-grade silicone, which is inert, easy to clean and withstands repeated autoclaving. Its temperature rating runs from -40°C to 230°C, comfortably covering steam-autoclave cycles at the top end and cold storage at the bottom, so the mat can go through the autoclave again and again without degrading. The standard sheet is 60 × 90 cm with a thickness of 6–15 mm, and it can be cut and trimmed to fit a particular instrument tray, basket or container.
Because it is reusable, the mat is bought as durable equipment rather than as a consumable — though it remains an economical way to protect expensive instruments. The flexible silicone absorbs knocks, so delicate tips, blades and hinges do not clash with one another or with the metal tray during handling and transport.
Drainage, organisation and instrument protection
The raised-pin (finger) structure does three jobs at once. First, it organises: instruments rest in the gaps between pins, separated and laid out so they can be counted, inspected and picked individually. Second, it drains: water and condensate run away between the open pins and steam circulates freely around each instrument, which is essential for effective cleaning and for the steam to reach every surface during sterilisation. Third, it protects: the soft silicone cushions sharp tips and fine working ends and stops instruments rolling, sliding or striking each other.
Taken together, this keeps a tray tidy and safe from the wash stage through to storage, reduces the risk of damage to costly surgical instruments and helps ensure that cleaning and sterilisation are thorough and verifiable.
Packaging and bulk supply
Silicone instrument mats are packed one piece per bag, with 20 bags to a carton, so each mat is supplied clean and individually for issue to the CSSD, theatre or laboratory. The 60 × 90 cm sheet can be cut to size on site, and thickness and dimensions can be supplied to OEM specification for particular trays and containers.
