What is a CPE isolation gown?
A CPE isolation gown is a disposable protective gown made entirely from CPE — cast polyethylene film. Unlike a non-woven gown that is fabric (and only splash-resistant) or a PE-coated gown that laminates film onto fabric, a CPE gown is a single sheet of solid plastic film with no fabric base. That means the whole gown is non-porous and completely impervious: liquids cannot pass through it anywhere.
This makes the CPE gown the highest-barrier choice in the isolation range. It is intended for high-risk contact — situations where the wearer must be fully shielded from blood, body fluids and other potentially infectious liquid. Material and waterproof barrier
Cast polyethylene (CPE) film is produced by casting molten polyethylene into a flat, even sheet, giving a soft, drapeable film that is more pliable and quieter than blown plastic. Because it is a continuous solid film, the gown is fully waterproof — there is no fabric for fluid to wick into and no pores for it to penetrate. Splashes, sprays and pooled liquid stay entirely on the outer surface.
Each gown weighs 18–40 grams per piece depending on film thickness; heavier weights give a more robust barrier and lighter weights more economy. The trade-off, as with any impervious gown, is that CPE does not breathe — it is chosen specifically for sealed liquid protection rather than long-wear comfort, which is why it suits defined high-risk tasks. Thumb loops, ties and fit
The defining feature of this gown is its thumb-loop sleeves: each cuff ends in a loop that the wearer hooks over the thumb. This anchors the sleeve so it cannot ride up the forearm during active care, and keeps the sleeve end held down beneath examination gloves — closing the gap between glove and gown that is otherwise a weak point in fluid protection.
The gown ties at the neck and at the waist, with a wrap-around back panel so the overlap covers the back of the uniform. Standard sizes are 114×154 cm and 120×150 cm (width × length), with other sizes available as required. The generous cut fits over normal clothing and, combined with the thumb loops and ties, gives full front and arm coverage for high-contact work.
Packaging and supply
CPE gowns are individually bagged — 1 piece per bag — then packed 10 pieces per middle bag and 10 middle bags per carton (100 pieces per carton). Individual bagging keeps each gown clean and dust-free until use and makes dispensing at an isolation-ward door straightforward.
